Can't find or use a food from the library

For professionalsWebBasic plan or higherUpdated on

When a food in the MyFitnessClient food library doesn't show up, can't be edited or won't go into a meal, see the cause and how to fix it.

The food library is in Nutrition, on the Food Library tab, and has three lists: Catalog, with the foods from MyFitnessClient and from the INSA table; Online, with Open Food Facts products; and My foods, with the ones you create or copy. Look for what you see in the sections that follow: each one gives the cause and what to do.

What the list shows

What you seeWhat it meansWhat to do
Gray rows, with no text. The list is loading.Wait a few seconds.
“No foods yet”, with “Create your first custom food” and the Create Food button. No food in the chosen list matches the search, the filters and the Show favorites only star. It is the same message you see the first time you open My foods, and it also appears in the Catalog.Follow the “I can't find a food” section.
A card with the Try again button and one of these titles: “We could not load this information”, “You are offline”, “You do not have access to this area”, “Too many requests” or “Service temporarily unavailable”.The list did not load: the internet connection failed, you don't have permission to see Nutrition in this workspace, you made too many requests in a row or the service failed.Select Try again. If you're offline, wait for the internet to come back; after too many requests, wait a moment. If you see “You do not have access to this area”, follow the “Buttons or actions are missing” section.
One of those titles in a line over the list, with no button. The page, search or filter you asked for did not load. The foods you see are from the previous request.Reload the page.
A food's photo doesn't show. On a computer, the row has no photo; on a narrow screen, such as a phone's, the first letter of the name appears. The food's image did not load.If the food is yours, edit it and upload another photo.

I can't find a food

CauseWhat to do
The food is in another list. Yours only appear in My foods; the MyFitnessClient and INSA table foods, in the Catalog; supermarket products you haven't saved yet, in Online.Select the right list.
The food is from the INSA table and, in the Catalog, MyFitnessClient is chosen.Under the search, select INSA. The two buttons only appear when the INSA table is available.
The search and filters stay active when you switch between Catalog and My foods.Clear the search and check the filters of the list you're in.
One of the words you typed isn't in the food's name, brand or subcategory. The search only shows foods that have all the words; accents and capital letters don't count.Type fewer words, for example only the main one.
In Filters, a category or subcategory is chosen, or the Show favorites only star is on.In Filters, select Clear. Turn off the star.
You're working in another workspace. In a team workspace, My foods shows that workspace's foods; in your personal workspace, it shows yours. In the switcher at the top of the side menu, choose the workspace where the food is.
In Online, “No results” appears with “Try a different search”. Open Food Facts doesn't have the product in the country of the site language.Try another word or the barcode. If it keeps happening, create the food by hand with the values from the label. When the search fails, another message appears: see the section “The product doesn't show up or the camera won't open”.

For the search and filter rules, see Search foods, filter by category and mark favorites. To create a food by hand, see Create or edit a custom food.

“This food is missing calories, protein, carbohydrates, or fat. Choose another food.”

It appears when you choose, for a meal, a food that is missing one of these four values: in red, over the add button, which is disabled, or in a notification. The food doesn't go into the meal. In the list and in the food's details, the missing value shows as “-”.

To use a Catalog food that is missing a value, copy it to your foods and complete the copy:

  1. In the side menu, select Nutrition.
  2. On the Food Library tab, select the Catalog tab.
  3. Select the food to open its details.
  4. Select Copy to My Library. The library switches to the My foods tab and “Food duplicated” appears.
  5. Select the copy, which has the original's name followed by “(Copy)”. If you can't find it, type the name in the search or reload the page.
  6. In the details, select Edit Food.
  7. Type the missing values, per 100 g or 100 ml.
  8. Select Save.

“Food updated” appears and the copy can now go into meals: add it instead of the original. If the food is already yours, open it in My foods and start from its details, with Edit Food. If the form shows a red message, see Can't save a food. In a team workspace, editing the copy requires the Nutrition > Edit permission (next section).

For copying catalog foods, see also Copy a catalog food to your foods. An Online product without these values can't go into a meal either: save it to your foods and fill in the values in the form, as in Add a product by name or barcode.

Buttons or actions are missing

  • Catalog foods can't be edited or deleted: their details show Copy to My Library. Edit and Delete only exist in My foods, in the row's ⋮ menu and when you right-click the row; in the details, they are Edit Food and Delete.
  • In a team workspace, Edit, Delete and Select only appear for those with the Nutrition > Edit permission, and only on the workspace's foods, in My foods. Without it, the details of a workspace food only show the values. To delete several, see Delete one or more foods from the library.
  • Without the Nutrition > Create permission, Add, Create Food and Copy to My Library do not appear. Ask the workspace owner for that permission.
  • If you see “You have more active clients than your plan allows. Choose which to keep or upgrade your plan.”, you have more active clients than your plan's limit. You can still see the library and mark favorites, but creating, copying, editing and deleting foods isn't saved. See You have more active clients than your plan allows.
  • If Nutrition doesn't appear in the side menu of a team workspace, you're missing the Nutrition > View permission: see “No permission to access” and menu items missing for a member. If the page shows what Nutrition does and a button to change plan, your plan doesn't include Nutrition: see Feature locked by your plan: what it means.

The product doesn't show up or the camera won't open

On the Online tab, Scan barcode opens the camera; on a phone, the button only shows the camera icon. These are the messages you may see:

MessageCauseWhat to do
“Product not found:” followed by the codeOpen Food Facts doesn't have the product, or you have no internet connection. When you go over the limit or Open Food Facts doesn't respond, the scan shows the message for that cause, in the next rows of this table. The message disappears after 3 seconds, and the camera won't look for the same code again for 30 seconds. To retry right away, type the code in the field under the camera image and select Search. If the product doesn't exist, create the food by hand with the values from the label.
“Error searching for product”, under the searchYou selected a product in the Online results and its values didn't arrive, even after a second attempt, for example because there was no internet connection or Open Food Facts didn't respond. The product's details show “-” in the values, and the message only shows when you close them.Close the details, check the connection and select the product again.
“Too many requests. Wait a moment.”, under the search on the Online tabYou went over the limit of 30 searches and code scans per minute; each pause while you type counts as a search.Wait a minute and try again.
“The online food database (Open Food Facts) is temporarily unavailable. Try again later.”Open Food Facts didn't respond.Try again later. If you need the food now, create it by hand with the values from the label.
“Search error”The search failed for another reason, for example no internet connection.Check the connection and try again.
“That's a QR code, not the product barcode. Point at the barcode on the pack.”The camera read a QR code that doesn't carry the product code.Point the camera at the barcode on the pack.
“That code isn't a food product code.”The scanned code isn't a valid product code, with 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits and a correct last digit.Point the camera at the product's barcode, or type it in the field under the image.
“No camera available on this device. Try on a phone or enter the barcode manually.”The browser didn't find any camera: the device has no camera, or the browser doesn't let this page use it.Use your phone, or type the barcode, from 8 to 14 digits, in the search on the Online tab.
“Camera permission denied. Allow camera access in your device settings.”You denied camera access to this site.In the browser settings, allow the camera for the MyFitnessClient site; on a phone, also allow the camera for the browser in the device settings. Then select Scan barcode again.
“Error starting camera:” followed by a message from the browserThe camera didn't start, for example because another app or another tab is using it.Close whatever is using the camera and select Scan barcode again.
“This browser doesn't allow the camera. Open the page with https:// in a browser like Chrome or Safari.”The browser doesn't let this page use the camera.Open the page with https:// in a browser like Chrome or Safari. Alternatively, type the barcode in the search on the Online tab.

To create the food by hand, see Create or edit a custom food. For the online search and the camera, see Add a product by name or barcode.

Meal plans and meals that already use a food keep the values it had when you added it. Copying, editing or deleting a food in the library doesn't change them. See Library foods and meals: what changes in plans.
