Food and meal library limits

For professionalsWebBasic plan or higherUpdated on

Check the limits of the MyFitnessClient food and meal libraries: favorites, search, deletion, names, notes and values.

These are the limits MyFitnessClient applies today to the two libraries on the Nutrition page, in the Food Library and Meal Library tabs. The libraries belong to the workspace, so everyone on the team with access to Nutrition sees the same ones; favorites, online searches and reports count per person. What each library holds is in The food library: catalog, INSA and your foods and in The meal library: ready-made meals for your plans.

Food library

In the food library, in the order you come across them:

WhatLimitWhere you see it
Your foods, in My foodsNo limit.You create and copy as many as you want. Clients have their own limit of 500 foods they create themselves.
Favorites200 per person.The star reverts to empty and “You have reached the limit of 200 favorites” appears.
Foods per page10, 20 or 50; starts at 20.In Show, at the bottom of the list.
Search in the libraryThe first 100 characters and the first 8 words.The rest doesn't count for the search, with no warning.
Product search in the Online tabFrom 2 to 100 characters; 100 results per page, up to 50 pages.With fewer than 2 characters the search doesn't run, and anything past 100 doesn't count. The next page of results arrives as you scroll down the list.
Online searches and barcode scans30 per minute, per person, added together.The search and a barcode scan show “Too many requests. Wait a moment.” until the minute is up.
Barcode scanned by the camera8, 12, 13 or 14 digits, with the correct check digit, or the pack's QR code carrying that code.A QR code with no product code shows “That's a QR code, not the product barcode. Point at the barcode on the pack.”, and another code shows “That code isn't a food product code.”. A code that failed isn't looked up again for 30 seconds.
Barcode typed by hand8 or more digits.In the field under the camera, Search stays disabled with fewer than 8 characters. In the Online tab search, a number of 8 to 14 digits looks up that code.
Deleting foods500 per request; “Select all” followed by the total selects up to 10,000 at a time.MyFitnessClient deletes in batches of 500. A deleted food can't be recovered.
NameFrom 2 to 255 characters.The field doesn't let you type more than 255. A 1-character name is rejected when saving.
BrandUp to 100 characters.The field doesn't let you type more.
Custom unitUp to 20 characters, starting with a letter, without brackets and different from g, kg, mg, ml and l.Until the unit meets these rules, you can't choose it.
Reference quantity, in the g and ml unitsFrom 1 to 5,000.When you leave the field, a value outside the range changes to the nearest limit, and an empty field or 0 goes back to 100.
PhotoImages only.It uses the account's storage space.
Reports on Catalog foods20 per day per person, counting foods and exercises together; 1 per food while the previous one isn't closed; description and suggestion up to 2,000 characters each.“You have reached the daily report limit” and “You already have a pending report for this item”.

Search and favorites are in Search foods, filter by category and mark favorites, online products and barcodes in Add a product by name or barcode, and reports in Copy a catalog food to your foods. If the account's storage fills up, see “Storage limit exceeded”: how to free up space.

Meal library

In the meal library:

WhatLimitWhere you see it
Meals in the libraryNo limit.Clients have their own limit of 200 meals they save themselves.
Meal nameFrom 1 to 50 characters when you type it; up to 100 in a duplicated or pasted meal.Without a name, the save button stays disabled, and the field doesn't let you type more than 50. When duplicating, the name gets the suffix “(Copy)”, or “(Copy 2)” if it was already a copy, and is shortened to fit in 100.
NoteUp to 5,000 characters.The field doesn't let you type more.
Foods in a mealFrom 1 to 500.Without foods, the save button stays disabled. With 500, adding one more food shows “Limit reached.”.
Substitutions for a food20; a substitution has no substitutions of its own.When you paste a meal or a food, each food keeps the first 20. With 20 on one food, the Add substitution line disappears; if you choose more than fit, “This food already has 20 substitutions, the maximum.” appears and only the ones that fit are added.
Name of a food inside the mealThe first 150 characters.The rest of the name is cut off when saving. A name longer than 255 characters stops the meal from being saved.
Meals per page10, 25 or 50; starts at 10.In Show, at the bottom of the list.
Deleting meals500 per request; “Select all” followed by the total selects all of them, with no cap.MyFitnessClient deletes in batches of 500.
Deleted mealCan't be recovered on screen.It leaves the list right away and is permanently deleted 30 days later.
Copy and PasteOne copied item at a time, for 24 hours.Copying something else replaces the previous one. The copy stays in the browser where you copied it, for the same account and the same workspace. Done and signing out clear the copy.

To delete several meals, see Delete one or more meals from the library. Substitutions are in Add food substitutions to a library meal, and copy and paste in Copy and paste meals, supplements, questions and lessons.

When the workspace has more active clients than the plan allows

While the workspace has more active clients than the plan allows, both libraries are read-only. MyFitnessClient refuses to create, edit, copy from the Catalog and delete foods, and to create, duplicate, edit, paste and delete meals, with the message “You have more active clients than your plan allows. Choose which to keep or upgrade your plan.”. You can still search, open food details, mark favorites and send reports. To fix it, see You have more active clients than your plan allows.

Limits on a food's values

The food form checks the values per 100 g or per 100 ml. If you type them for another quantity, it checks them after converting them to 100 g or 100 ml.

ValueMaximum per 100 g or 100 ml
Calories900 kcal
Protein, carbs, fat, saturated fat, fiber and sugar100 g each
Salt50 g
Potassium10,000 mg

The form also checks that:

  • calories, protein, carbs and fat are filled in, and 0 counts as a value;
  • no value is negative;
  • protein, carbs and fat add up to 100 g at most, with leeway up to 100.5 g for rounding;
  • saturated fat doesn't exceed fat, and sugar doesn't exceed carbs;
  • calories reach what protein and fat give, at 4 kcal per gram of protein and 9 kcal per gram of fat, with a margin of 10% and 2 kcal. Carbs are left out of this calculation.

The message for each rule and how to fix it are in Can't save a food.
