Can't upload or attach a file

For professionalsWebBasic plan or higherUpdated on

When MyFitnessClient refuses a file in Materials, in chat or on another screen, see what each message means and how to resolve the refusal.

This happens when you upload or attach a file in the dashboard and the upload is refused: in Materials, in chat (attachments and voice messages), on an exercise, on the photo of a food or a supplement, in an assessment or a check-in, on a cover image, in a questionnaire, in a course lesson or in the public profile gallery. All these uploads go through the same checks, so the messages and the solutions are the same. When a check fails, the file is not saved.

The server answers with the first refusal it finds, in this order: too many requests, plan, account with too many active clients, team permission and, only then, the file (type and size) and the space. So a member without permission in a workspace whose plan does not include file uploads sees the plan message, not the permission one. After you resolve one refusal, the next one may appear.

The profile photo and the brand logo do not go through these checks: they have their own limits and messages.

What to check, in this order

To find out why the upload was refused:

  1. Read the message in the notice and look for it in the “Messages and solutions” section. If the screen shows only a generic sentence, continue with the next steps.
  2. Confirm that the plan includes File uploads, the name the plan's feature list gives to file uploading. In a team's workspace, the owner's plan counts, not yours.
  3. If you are in a team's workspace, open Team in the side menu and check under My permissions whether you have the permission that upload needs (“Permissions in a team” section).
  4. Check the file: it must have content (0 bytes does not pass), be 2 GB at most and must not have a program extension, such as .exe or .bat.
  5. Check the space: in the side menu, open Materials and look at the Storage card for the space used and the limit. In a team's workspace, the card shows the owner's space. If Materials does not appear in the menu, you are missing the permission to view Materials: ask the owner to check the space.

When the upload passes, the file appears in the place where you uploaded it.

To see the plan and the included features, see View your plan, what it includes and how much you use.

Messages and solutions

The sentences are the ones on the screen, copied letter for letter.

MessageCauseWhat to do
“This feature is not included in the current plan.”The plan of the workspace you are working in does not include file uploads. The rule applies to every upload by the professional, not only to Materials. A voice message also needs the “Audio messages in chat” feature.Change to a plan that includes “File uploads”. In a team, the owner is the one who changes the plan.
“You have more active clients than your plan allows. Choose which to keep or upgrade your plan.”The account, or the team you are working in, has more active clients than the plan allows. While that is the case, the server refuses every upload.Choose the clients who stay active or change your plan. In a team, the owner is the one who resolves it.
“You don't have permission to do this in this team.”You are a member of a team and you are missing the permission that upload needs. The message does not say which one.See the “Permissions in a team” section and ask the owner for the permission.
“The file is empty.”The file has 0 bytes. The site refuses it before uploading it.Use another file, with content.
“Program files (.exe, .bat and similar) are not allowed.”The file has a program extension: exe, bat, cmd, com, sh, msi, ps1, vbs, vbe, wsf, wsh, scr or pif. The site refuses it before uploading it. In a chat conversation, “This file type is not allowed.” appears first.Use another file.
“Invalid data. Check the fields.”The file is of a type that screen does not accept.Use another file. The types each screen accepts are in the “Accepted file types” section.
“File is too large.”, when uploading a fileThe file exceeds the maximum of 2 GB (2048 MB) per file. Attachments to an exercise note have their own maximums, 25 MB per image and 250 MB per video.Compress the file or split it into smaller parts.
“This content is too large to save.”What you were saving takes up more than one request accepts: 1 MB for most saves and 8 MB when saving a whole course, which happens when you paste, duplicate or undo in the course builder.Split the content: shorten the texts or divide the course into smaller courses, and save again.
“The file or data you sent is too large.”The request was refused because of its size before it reached the MyFitnessClient server, so it comes with no further explanation.Reduce what you are sending and try again.
“This file content does not match its type or is not allowed.”The server read the start of the file and found a program or a script with another extension, or a file presented as an image whose content is not an image of an accepted type.Use another file. An image can be exported again as JPG or PNG.
“You have reached your plan storage limit.”The file does not fit in the space that remains. Uploads still in progress also count toward the limit.Free up space or change your plan.
“The team's file storage is full. We've let the team owner know.”You are a member of a team and the file does not fit in the owner's space, where the files of all members count. The owner receives a notice, one a day at most.Ask the owner to free up space or change the plan.
“The file upload stopped partway. Check your connection and try again.”The connection dropped or stalled during the upload. The site tries each file up to 3 times before showing the message.Check your internet connection and upload the file again.
“The file is still being saved. Wait a moment and try again.”The file is large and the server was still saving it when the site stopped waiting, after more than 5 minutes.Wait a few minutes. In Materials, reload the page before uploading again: the file may already be there.
“The upload expired. Upload the file again.”The upload was not completed in time. Each upload has 2 hours to finish.Upload the file again.
“The file is no longer available or is still being processed. Upload it again.”The server could not finish saving the file it received.Upload the file again.
“Too many requests. Wait a moment.”You uploaded many files in a short time. The limit is 30 upload requests per minute and each file uses at least 2, so you reach it with more than 15 files in one minute.Wait a minute and upload the remaining files.
“You don't have permission for this action.”The upload started in one workspace and was completed in another, for example because you switched workspace in another browser tab in the middle of the upload.Upload the file again and do not switch workspace until the upload ends.
No reason, or, in chat, in an exercise and in the photo of a food, “This device can't read this photo (HEIC format). Convert it to JPEG and send it again.”The photo is HEIC or HEIF and neither the browser nor MyFitnessClient could convert it. In Materials, the uploads card shows only “Upload failed”.Convert the photo to JPG or PNG and upload it again.

To free up space, see “Storage limit exceeded”: how to free up space. For the client limit, see You have more active clients than your plan allows. The sentences about too many requests and an unavailable server are in Server temporarily unavailable or too many requests in a row.

If the plan does not include file uploads, the Materials page does not show this notice. In your personal workspace, with files stored, it opens read-only, with the notice “Read-only mode: you can view, download, and delete files, but you cannot upload or change folders.” and without Upload; the same happens when the account is frozen for having too many clients. With no files stored, it opens on the locked feature screen, explained in Feature locked by your plan: what it means.

Accepted file types

  • Chat, Materials and lesson files: any type, except programs.
  • Exercises: images, videos and audio.
  • Assessments, check-ins, questionnaires and workout notes: images and videos.
  • Cover images, food photos, public profile gallery, images inside Materials pages and lesson images: images only.
  • Lesson video: videos only.

Outside chat, Materials and lesson files, a video must be MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, 3GP or MKV.

Permissions in a team

In a team's workspace, a member uploads files where they can edit: each upload accepts the permission of its own area, and Manage in Materials works for every upload. The owner does not need a permission. The areas and the actions use the names from the permissions editor.

What you uploadPermission that works
Chat attachments and voice messages, broadcast message, scheduled message and reply to a workout noteChat > Send messages
Image, videos and audio of an exerciseWorkouts > Edit or Create
Photo of a foodNutrition > Edit or Create
Photo of a supplementSupplements > Edit or Create
Photos and videos of an assessment or a check-inAssessments > Create or Edit
Images and videos of a questionnaireQuestionnaires > Create. Send is not enough.
Photos and videos attached to an exercise note, when you log a client's workoutWorkouts > Assign. Edit is not enough.
Cover images of workouts, programs, meal plans and payment packagesOne of these: Programs > Edit, Nutrition > Edit, Supplements > Edit, Workouts > Edit or Questionnaires > Create
Materials files and folders and images inside pagesOnly Materials > Manage

In Materials, without Manage, the Upload and New folder buttons do not appear. The server reads the permissions on every upload, so a new permission applies right away; if a button stays hidden, reload the page. For the owner to give the permission, follow “How the owner gives access” in “No permission to access” and menu items missing for a member.

The images of your public profile and what you upload in My area are personal: they count toward your plan and your space, even with a team's workspace selected, and do not depend on the team's permissions.

Where the notice appears

Not every screen repeats the reason the server gave.

  • They show the reason: chat, Materials (when uploading files or dragging them in), exercises, supplements, the photo of a food, cover images and Materials pages.
  • They show a sentence of their own, without the reason: course lessons (“Upload failed”), the public profile (“Error updating cover image”), assessment videos (“Failed to upload the video.”) and, in Materials, the upload of a whole folder (“Something went wrong. Try again.”).
  • When the upload uses the uploads card, at the bottom of the screen, the card shows “Upload failed” for about 2 seconds. In a chat conversation, the progress appears on the attachment itself.
  • Two notices appear on any screen: the team permission one, in red, and the one about too many active clients, in amber.

If the screen only shows a sentence of its own, use the “What to check, in this order” list.

Messages your clients see

The plan's file upload feature and the team's permissions do not apply to clients. The files a client sends count toward your space, so the client's refusals depend on your space and on the coaching.

MessageCauseWhat you can do
“Your professional's file storage is full. We've let them know.”The client's file does not fit in your space. You receive the “Your file storage is full” notification, in the bell and as a push notification, one a day at most.Free up space or change your plan.
“Your professional's file storage is used up. We've let them know.”Your plan has no file storage. You receive the “Your plan has no file storage” notification.Change to a plan with file storage.
“Your coaching has ended: you can keep writing, but you can no longer send files.”That client's coaching has ended and the chat stays open.To send files again, the client needs active coaching with you.
“Your coaching hasn't started yet: you can write, but you can't send files yet.”The coaching is scheduled and has not reached its start date yet.The client can send files once the coaching starts.
“You can't send files without a professional coaching you.”The client has no professional, so the client's files have nowhere to count. The client needs active coaching.
“This account can't send files here.”A screen offered the client an upload the client's account cannot make. A client only sends files in chat, in check-ins, in the profile, in foods, in questionnaires, in exercises and in workout notes. This is our mistake. Contact support and say on which screen it happened.

If this did not solve it

Contact support (see Contact Support and create a request) with the exact message, the screen you were on, the type and size of the file and the time you tried. If the refusal happened in chat, also see The message was not sent and Retry appears.
