Not receiving notifications on your phone or in the browser

For clientsWeb and appUpdated on

This happens when MyFitnessClient push notifications don't reach your phone or browser. See the most likely causes and how to turn Notifications back on.

Notifications that appear on your phone or computer screen, even when MyFitnessClient is closed, are called push notifications. In most cases, one of three things is missing: Push turned on for that device, permission from the browser or the phone, or the notification type turned on.

First, check whether the notification is in the bell

The bell keeps your unread notifications, even when the push notification doesn't arrive. On your phone and in the app, it is at the top of the screen; on a computer, it is at the bottom of the side menu, next to your name.

  • If the notification is in the bell, only the push notification is failing: follow the steps and the tables.
  • If it isn't, it may be a notification that only arrives by push. This is the case for chat messages, which only appear in Chat, meal reminders and supplement reminders. To see where each notification goes, see Client notification types: what they tell you and where they lead.
  • The bell only shows unread notifications. A notification you have already read on another device, or one that asked for something you have already done, leaves the bell.

Steps

The most common cause is Push being turned off on the device where the notification doesn't arrive. Follow these steps on that device. If you don't know where Settings is, see Client settings: where to find each option.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Notifications.
  3. Turn on Push.
  4. If the browser or the phone asks whether it can show notifications, accept.
  5. In the list of notification types, turn on the type of notification that isn't arriving.
  6. Optional: repeat these steps in each browser and on each phone where you want to receive notifications. Turning off Push on one device doesn't turn it off on the others.

With Push turned on, the next notifications reach this device. If an error message appears, or if the app opens the phone's settings instead of asking, look up what you saw in the tables that follow.

Causes and what to do

If Push won't stay on, or it was already on and notifications still don't arrive, look for the cause in the table for the platform where the notification doesn't arrive, and then in the shared table. The causes are listed from most to least likely.

On the web

In the browser on a computer or phone, including MyFitnessClient installed on the home screen.

Push is turned off in this browser.In Settings > Notifications, the Push switch is off. Push is set per browser and has to be turned on in each one. Choosing Not now in the “Enable notifications” prompt also leaves it off, and that prompt can only come back after 14 days.Turn on Push, as in the steps.
The browser blocked notifications from the site, or you closed its prompt without accepting.When you turn on Push, “Notification permission denied” appears.Turn on Push again and accept the browser's prompt. If it doesn't appear, allow notifications in the browser's site settings, reload the page and, if Push is still off, turn it on.
The browser doesn't receive push notifications. On iPhone and iPad, Safari only receives them with MyFitnessClient installed on the home screen.When you turn on Push, “Error enabling push notifications” appears.On iPhone or iPad, add MyFitnessClient to the home screen, open it from that icon, sign in and turn on Push there. On another device, reload the page and try again; if the message comes back, try another browser.
The browser couldn't set up push notifications.When you turn on Push, “Error getting notification key” appears.Reload the page and turn on Push again. If the message comes back, contact support.

In the app

On Android, one of the app's notification categories is turned off.In the phone's settings, under the app's notifications, one of these categories is turned off: Messages, Reminders, Workouts and plans, Payments and account or Updates, and also Notifications or General, if they appear. The names are in the phone's language.Turn the category on. Updates notifications arrive without sound and without a banner.
The phone is in Do Not Disturb or another focus mode.Notifications from other apps don't appear either.Turn that mode off, or let the app through in its settings.

The notification type is turned off.In Settings > Notifications, the switch for that type is off. Types apply to the account, on all devices.Turn on the notification type.
The session on that device has ended.Signing out on a device, or ending its session in the list of sessions, turns off push notifications for that device. Changing or resetting your password, or confirming a new email, ends the sessions on all devices and turns off push notifications on all of them.Sign in again on each device. With the browser's or the phone's permission already given, push notifications turn back on by themselves; if Push is still off, turn it on.

The device was off or had no connection.A push notification waits for the device for a limited time: 1 hour for a meal or supplement reminder, 48 hours for a message. After that, it no longer appears.Open MyFitnessClient to see what changed. Notifications that have a line in the bell are still there.
You haven't opened MyFitnessClient on that device for more than 90 days.After 90 days without opening MyFitnessClient on a device, push notifications for that device stop working.Open MyFitnessClient on that device while signed in: push notifications work again.

To end sessions on other devices, see View and end the open sessions on your account. Meal, supplement and habit reminders also depend on their times: see Nutrition reminders, notices and what your professional sees, Turn supplement reminders on or off and Common problems with your habits and how to fix them.

Questions

I have the app and the website on my phone. Why does only the app get the notifications?

So you don't get the same notification twice. While the app is signed in and was opened in the last 7 days, the website on your phone, in the browser or installed on the home screen, only receives the push notification when the app can't receive it. The browser on your computer receives it anyway.

Why does the notification only say “Open the app to view the details.”?

The session on that device has expired, because 30 days went by without you using MyFitnessClient on it. In that case, the notification arrives without the details. Open MyFitnessClient and sign in again.

With the app open, the notification makes no sound. Is that normal?

Yes. With the app open, notifications appear in a banner at the top of the screen, without sound. Chat messages don't create a notification, because they appear straight away in Chat.

Why do notifications disappear from the notification screen of my phone or computer?

When you do what a notification asked for, its notification goes away. In the browser, opening MyFitnessClient closes its notifications. In the app, on Android, they all go away when you have nothing left unread.

If this did not solve it

Write to the MyFitnessClient team using the contact shown at the end of the Help Center home page (in the app, on the “Problems with the app” line). Include:

  • the model of your phone or computer and its operating system;
  • whether you use the app or the browser and, if the browser, which one;
  • whether Push is turned on for that device;
  • whether the notification appears in the bell;
  • the type of notification that is missing and roughly when it should have arrived.
