Change the units: metric or imperial (US)

Web and appUpdated on

In MyFitnessClient, you choose Metric or Imperial (US) in Settings > Units to see and enter weights, measurements and distances in those units.

Before you start

  • There are two options: Metric, with kilograms, centimeters, kilometers and milliliters, and Imperial (US), with pounds, inches, feet and inches for height, miles and fluid ounces.
  • The choice is saved on your account and applies in every browser you sign in to.
  • Until you choose, the account uses Imperial (US) if it was created in the United States, and Metric in all other cases.
  • Values are always stored in metric units. Changing the option only changes the units you see and enter them in: no record is changed.

Interactive tutorial

Opens in the app and needs you to be signed in.

Steps

To change the units on the web, in the professional dashboard or in the client account:

  1. At the bottom of the side menu, select your photo and name, then Settings. On a phone, open the menu and, at the bottom of it, select Settings.
  2. In the Preferences group, select Units.
  3. Select Metric or Imperial (US). Under the two options, a line gives the units of the chosen option.

The account saves the choice straight away, and the site shows weights, measurements and distances in the new units.

In the app

The app does not have the Units option yet: it shows weights, measurements and distances in metric units, whatever the account's choice.

What changes with Imperial (US)

MeasureMetricImperial (US)
Workout loads, body weight, fat mass, lean mass and muscle masskglb, with one decimal place
Grip strengthkglb, in whole numbers
Circumferences and Sit & reachcmin
Heightcmft and in, for example 5 ft 9.8 in
Distanceskm or mmi
Pace and speedper km and km/hper mi and mph
Waterml or Lfl oz
Food amountsg or mloz or fl oz; when typing, also lb and cup
Habits measured in ml, L or kmml, L or kmfl oz or mi

These stay the same with both options:

  • calories, in kcal, and protein, carbs and fat, in grams;
  • amounts per kg of body weight, such as protein in g/kg in the Macro Calculator and supplement doses per kg;
  • skinfolds, in mm, VO2max, percentages and BMI;
  • units a professional typed by hand, for example in a habit;
  • CSV exports, always in metric units.

When the professional and the client use different units

Each person sees and enters values in their own units. If the professional uses Metric and prescribes 60 kg, a client with Imperial (US) sees 132.3 lb. If the client logs 135 lb, the professional sees 61.2 kg.

A PDF exported for a client comes out in that client's units. Other PDFs come out in the units of the person who exports them.

Common problems

“The units could not be saved. Try again.”

The account did not save the choice, for example because there is no internet connection, and the previous option stays selected. Check the connection and select the option you want again.

A value I entered shows a different decimal

Values are stored in metric units, and each person sees them converted and rounded to one decimal place. For example, 135 lb is stored as 61.23 kg: someone using Metric sees 61.2 kg, and someone using Imperial (US) sees 135 lb again.

Questions

Does changing my units change my clients' units?

No. Each account has its own units: changing yours does not change your clients' or your professional's.

Why don't calories and macros change?

Calories stay in kcal and macros in grams with both options. US nutrition labels also give macros in grams.
