This calculator estimates BMR, the resting metabolic rate, with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990), and daily energy expenditure at each activity level. In a 2005 systematic review it was the most reliable of the four most used equations, though it can still be noticeably off for a given person. It was built on 498 healthy adults aged 19 to 78, so it is not for children or teenagers, and that is why the calculator only takes ages from 18. Daily expenditure multiplies BMR by conventional activity factors, for which we found no source study.
How it's calculated
Resting metabolic rate (BMR)
The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, published in 1990 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by Mifflin, St Jeor and colleagues. It was built on 498 healthy adults whose resting metabolic rate was measured by indirect calorimetry, and that is the value it estimates: on this page, that is what we call BMR. Weight goes in kilograms, height in centimeters and age in years.
- Men: BMR = 10 × weight + 6.25 × height − 5 × age + 5
- Women: BMR = 10 × weight + 6.25 × height − 5 × age − 161
Total daily energy expenditure
TDEE is the BMR multiplied by the activity factor, from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (very active).
- TDEE = BMR × activity factor
Example
A 32-year-old man, 78 kg and 178 cm tall, who trains 3 to 5 times a week:
- BMR = 10 × 78 + 6.25 × 178 − 5 × 32 + 5 = 1,737.5 kcal
- TDEE = 1,737.5 × 1.55 ≈ 2,693 kcal
| Sedentary | 2,085 kcal |
|---|---|
| Light | 2,389 kcal |
| Moderate | 2,693 kcal |
| Active | 2,997 kcal |
| Very active | 3,301 kcal |

The factors are a convention used by many calculators: we did not find the study it comes from.
